Introduction to Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) Applications and the New Spectrum Compact CE System

  • Take control of your experiments by sequencing right on your benchtop
  • Avoid batching samples or depending on a sequencing service with flexible run scheduling and small batch processing
  • Get the support you need to get started with CE, including on-site installation and personalized training

Summary

Capillary electrophoresis is used for the analysis of fluorescently labeled DNA molecules and can be applied to fragment or sequencing analysis. While capillary electrophoresis (CE) instruments are often large and expensive, the new Spectrum Compact CE System makes it easier for labs to keep these applications in-house, which can reduce cost-per-sample in the long run and help researchers avoid delays and scheduling headaches. This presentation will introduce you to capillary electrophoresis (CE) for the analysis of fluorescently labeled DNA molecules. Fragment and sequencing analysis will be described along with an overview of the new Spectrum Compact CE System.

Robert McLaren, PhD
Senior Research Scientist
Presenter

Bob McLaren received his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology from University College London and his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Dundee. After pursuing postdoctoral work at UW Madison and NIH he joined Promega in 1998. Since 2001 the main focus of his work at Promega has been on supporting and developing products for the forensics and paternity testing community.  In the last 13 years or so he has been one of the lead R&D scientists developing several multiplex PCR systems for the analysis of forensically relevant STR markers  as well as reagents that make it possible to perform direct amplification from a variety of sample types and quantitation of total human and male DNA in forensic samples prior to STR amplification. Most recently he was the lead R&D scientist at Promega for the joint launch of the Spectrum Compact CE System with Hitachi High Tech. He is now responsible for the Genetic Identity R&D team at Promega.

Jay Lemke, PhD
Senior Research Scientist
Applications Expert

Jay Lemke received his Bachelors of Science in Bacteriology as well as his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. After his postdoctoral research and a short stint at a start-up vaccine company, he joined Promega in 2016 in the Genetic Identity group. Since then he has been the lead R&D scientist developing Promega’s capillary electrophoresis sequencing chemistry, ProDye® Terminator Sequencing System, as well as aiding in the development of the Spectrum Compact CE System. He recently joined the Clinical Diagnostics R&D group at Promega.
